bash.exe as a tab

Hello --- from time to time I will run the cygwin bash shell ( bash.exe ) as a tab via take command ( I don't run the mintty.exe windows manager, bit bash.exe directly) This seemed to work fine -- but then I upgraded the OS from w7 to w10. can start bash.exe as a tab, but the console i/o is "foobar" -- If I then detach the bash tab, i/o goes back to normal --- Does anyone know a way around this? Thanks
