FFIND's /TE switch

This suggests that FFIND's /TE option is leaving the 'E' in the regex.

v:\> ffind /te"[Tab" /v d:\tcmd.ini
TCC: premature end of char-class "(?i)e"[Tab""

I can't make FFIND /TE find any text in any file.

Yours is correct. I had aliased FFIND to FSEARCH. That messed me up several times. The alias is gone now.
