More issues with NG access by email

Attachments are not included in the emails received. I must use the browser
to log in into the web forum, on a unique page, so that my saved
username/password are not automatically entered by the browser. This makes
it difficult to access attachments.

Attachments should be part of the distribution. A major reason for accessing
the NGs by email is to be able to read the NG offline.

Responding to a poster privately is not possible with the "mail:" method.
The only available reply type is "reply to sender", which is the NG. With
nntp: (news:) one can either "reply to sender" or "reply to group" (ctrl-R
and ctrl-G, resp., in Outlook Express).

Definitely *not* -- do you really want to get everything that somebody
posts as an attachment to the forum (including spam, viruses, worms, and
some very very large screen shot jpgs)?

That's blocked by most users, who don't want their email addresses
publicly available.

I've seen debates on this in a lot of mailing lists. The problem is
that not everyone *wants* the attachments. If they get attached to
every outgoing post, people get them like it or not. The popular Gnu
Mailman and Ecartis list managers both have options to strip the
attachment and replace it with a URL to where it is stored on the
server, so it can be grabbed by those who would like to have it.

I have a fast (10 mbit.sec) cable modem connection, so I don't care.
Folks on slower connections or dial-up can care a lot.

Y E S ! I have a full-time virus scanner for protection. If the attachment
is both large and uninteresting, I can discard it if I want to (though with
over 200GB free I probably wouldn't), but I never see it if it stays
web-accessible only. I probably spend no more than 5 hours a YEAR browsing
the web (that does not include visiting weather, governmental and roadmap
sites, which I consider as work, not browsing). When a message I received
contains a URL, when I click on it I expect to see the item, not a forum
log-in page.

It should be the user's choice, not the NGs. If the poster uses a fake
address, as many do in NGs, it will come back to me undelivered. I send
private responses to maintain privacy, e.g., a private correction to the
message's grammar is more polite than a public rebuke.

The jpsoft server does not deliver the true URL of the attachment. It
directs you to the login page, where I stopped. It may take you to the
attachment once logged in, but I never memorize my logins - they are stored
by Firefox' password saver, which works by full URL only. For a few sites
that FF cannot handle I use special procedures so I need remember only one
master password. This does not work here.

I think the only ones who receive the complete set of NG messages by email
are the ones who want their own copies. If you want your own copy of the
message, wouldn't you also want your own copy of its attachments?

The answer is truly simple: make it part of the user profile whether or not
attachments should be included in the mail sent.

| I'll forward that to the vBulletin authors. But don't hold your

Too bad it isn't one of your products, or it would happen near instantly.

By VB, do you mean vBulletin? And in the sentence above, did you mean
"add-in"?
|
| This is the only one I found.
|
| I also was wondering why there is no reply button but only a reply
| with quote or multi quote.

Were you attempting to ask Rex, me (Steve Fabian), or the NG readers in
general? Are you referring to the web-mode or the email-mode? In the e-mail
mode the options of how to answer are dependent on your mail client, not the
NG server.

Email Integration 2.6 by Cyricx.

Not sure what you're asking here -- If you're using an email response,
there isn't any reply button, with or without quote or multi quote.
