While articles posted via the web interface appear and are emailed nearly
instantly, it seems that articles posted by email are subject to some variable
delay after which they appear on the web and are emailed immediately thereafter.

Is it that incoming email is serviced every 10 minutes (my guess based on
experience)? Can it be made (much) more often?

Out of curiosity, is the mail server integrated with the BBS? I doubt it, so if
not, is the mail placed in a directory scanned by the BBS at regular intervals
or is the mail stored in a customary mail drop and POP'd by the BBS at regular
intervals? Or is there some other mechanism?

I guess my 10 minute estimate was wrong. The article to which I'm replying
appeared on the BBS and was delivered to my mail server 13 minutes after
jpsoft.com accepted it. Can you get it down to, say, 1 minute?

The email updates (incoming & outgoing) occur every minute. They cannot
be made more often than that.

I've never had to wait more than a minute or two to get an email
notification of something I've send via web or email.

The mail server is not integrated with the forum. The forum software
queries its mailbox once a minute to retrieve or send mail.

Didn't you write elsewhere that it was 10 minutes? When I post by email, the
delay before I receive my post by email is **routinely** some arbitrary time
between 0 and 10 minutes. Last night I posted a message that appeared on the
web and at my mail server 44 minutes after it was accepted via SMTP.

For this message I'll press "Send" at 12:56:00.

It'll be accepted by mx.mailboxcop.com (spam.apollohosting.com) within 30
seconds. We'll see when it reaches the BBS.

Indeed, it was delivered promptly at 12:56:

I received the "instant" notification 10+ minutes later, and the web interface
says it was posted at 13:06:

Previously, it was. I edited the PHP script to change the CRON calls to
once per minute.

And this message was posted & emailed back to me in less than 2 minutes.

Are you using vBulletin's "Scheduled Tasks"? If so, did you know ...

Warning:
vBulletin’s scheduled tasks system does not constantly run on the server like
cron and scheduled tasks in Windows®. Tasks are automatically run when a user
browses your board, so if your board does not have any traffic at a given time,
tasks scheduled to run then will not run until later.

Indeed, it seems I can expedite mail processing by visiting the BBS.

And the BBS gets a little confused. When I just visited, my CP page said the
last post in "Support" (subscribed) was by me an 13:06. But when I went to the
"Support" page it said the last post was by me at 13:18. I have seen that many
times.

This email sent at 13:30:00.
