New icons, ugh

I don't like the new icons. I suppose they are more represnetative of the application, but, the old ones were cleaner, instantly recognizable. Please at least keep the old ones as secondary icons.

The old icons are ghastly in Windows 7. You're free to extract the icons
from the old exe's and use them in shortcuts, but I will not be including
them in new versions of TCMD or TCC.

I think it's a color thing. The old orange and/or green circles stood out
on the task bar and drew your eyes to them. The new CMD-like icon doesn't
stand out as much and I find myself searching more to find it. But that's
most likely just a learned behavior I need to retrain myself on.

As much as I fear change, I have become accustomed to the new icons very
quickly and do like them now. The first couple weeks, I kept clicking the
wrong one to start / switch back to, but now I am retrained.

My TCC sessions are stand-alone, started and resumed with hotkey (or with alt-tab), so icon recognition is not an issue, but IMHO the new TCC icon is too much like CMD.EXE's icon, not representing TCC's superior quality well. The letters in the green ball can be read on the desktop icon, but not in the taskbar etc. icons.

Made me think of a DivX icon at first... but they look OK to me. That said we are all free to use whatever we want I guess. The icon is the least of my concern with any product. :-)

To all ....

UGH its just an icon... Who cares about how it looks design n use your own!
The shell it self is of the highest importance

I agree. Its easy enough to extract the icons, and the old ones were neither indicative of the product nor very aesthetic.

One gripe, though: I have the icons of TC and TCx64 on my desktop, and they are the same, while the icon of TCC LE has a slightly redder circle. Couldn't you change the color of the circles to something individual for each program (e.g. teal for x64)?.

Okay, there are possibilities to edit icons oneself.

I liked the old icons, they were simple and very distinct. But I'll probably get used to the new ones even if they are a bit too close to CMD.EXE icon for my liking.

What was the problem in Windows 7? I use that as well and had no issue with them there.

I doubt that more than a tiny fraction of Take Command users are going to have both the 32 and 64-bit versions installed.

They didn't scale to the larger (>32x32) sizes.

Where would you need such icons though? Isn't the new (bigger) task bar icons 32x32 by default?

One place would maybe be "extra large icons view" in Explorer, but that is hardly a normal use case for TCMD.

I feel like I'm missing something! :)

Probably true. In this case, however, it would be easy to give each version a distinctive icon by just changing the color of the TC circle.

Alas, I have done this for me. If anybody else wants oldstyle TC icons in several colors or newstyle icons with a different TC circle color, drop me a line. I've found http://icofx.ro/>, an icon editor easy to work with, which I recommend.

There's a lot more impaired vision users out there than you think!

Also, the larger icons are used in the Windows installer & uninstaller control panel), in the About box, on the trial dialog, in the help, and on the new web site. (And in a few zillion third-party apps that want to display the larger icons.)

Right, seems I haven't quite gotten used to the new Vista/W7 user interface yet!

I checked out the Add/Remove programs. TCMD icons looks fine with "Medium size" (double the size of taskbar icons it seems to me), but with "Large" and "Extra Large" it does not do as well. The icon remains the same apparent size as medium, just gets lots of empty white space around it. But so did many other programs as well.

Firefox and Thunderbird works very good in comparison, they get larger and more detailed icons (vector graphics?) all the way up. The Google Chrome icon OTOH just seems to use bitmap scaling at larger sizes, it gets larger and grainier.

The new web site looks great, btw. Definitely an improvement compared to the old layout and logos. I will look forward to reading the customer stories when they become available, always thought TCMD should have something like that.

Well, as a request, you might consider doing updated icons that are more similar to the old icons but are more scale-friendly and provide them as secondary icons if you don't like them as primary icons.

I've made some v.11 and v.12 icons in different colors, which you could use. you can find them at <http://www.4dos.info/4xbtm.htm>.

I agree, the new icons more attractive but "TCC" is too small to be easily legible. The v11 icons are more informative.

I had been using a "cmd-style" custom icon for 4NT/TCC for years (in my version, the "prompt" is "J:\" instead of "C:\"), which scaled very nicely from "itty-bitty" to "holy cow that's a big icon".

To me, the change to the icons is a welcome one, and I no longer have to customize the shortcut to get a good, representative icon.

I may be in the minority on this thread; thanks just the same, Rex.
