Rex: Missing email messages from all forums

I seem to be missing messages being emailed. I have my nc.rr.com account set to even deliver messages that are marked as S.P.A.M. so the messages are not getitng to my webbased inbox to be delivered. Anything I can do from my end to help solve this problem?

In http://www.jpsoft.com/forums/showpost.php?p=519&postcount=1 you said I had to respond to the validation email to enable email access. I think I did this for all the forums. Anyway I can check?

Thank you.

P.S. I was also on the jpsoft forums and didn't see a way to change my name from email address to my actual name; I think when I registered I just used Google Toolbar to fill in the fields and didn't check the field contents before going further.... sorry.

I just did a online chat with nc.rr.com support. they had me empty the deleted folder on the webmail site and checked that I wasn't leaving email on the server since check with OE. Is there any way I can get all the messages on all the boards I'm sub'ed to and just make sure this has been fixed?

And how do get my user name changed from my email address to my real name?

That's jpsoft.com, and I can do a (RoadRunner) type=ptr lookup.

Hi Vince,

So is the problem on my end or on JPSofts? And also is it possible for me to do a lookup like you did? If so I'd love to know the steps....

If you have the bind utilities installed you can use "host <ip address>",
otherwise, use "nslookup"

[C:\]host 66.242.19.217
217.19.242.66.IN-ADDR.ARPA domain name pointer jpsoft.com

[C:\]nslookup 66.242.19.217
Server: frisco.perea.net
Address: 172.20.20.20

Name: jpsoft.com
Address: 66.242.19.217

My guess it is a RoadRunner DNS problem (your end). Apparently, the DNS server
couldn't do a reverse lookup on the IP address delivering the mail. And, again
apparently, RR won't accept email from non-resolvable IPs (a common anti-spam
measure).

The simplest way is:

v:\> nslookup 66.242.19.217
Server: dns-cac-dts-01.nyroc.rr.com
Address: 24.92.226.40

Name: jpsoft.com
Address: 66.242.19.217

I had done this (">" is the nslookup prompt):

v:\> nslookup
Default Server: dns-cac-dts-01.nyroc.rr.com
Address: 24.92.226.40

> set type=ptr
> 217.19.242.66.in-addr.arpa
Server: dns-cac-dts-01.nyroc.rr.com
Address: 24.92.226.40

Non-authoritative answer:
217.19.242.66.in-addr.arpa name = jpsoft.com

"Non-authoritative" means the RR server did not go to the source but rather used
a cached record.

But it's also possible that the DNS record at RoadRunner had expired and that
the failure occurred when RR's DNS server tried to contact another DNS server
higher up the food chain. A deeper query would look like this:

First recurse to find out the responsible DNS server:

v:\> nslookup
Default Server: dns-cac-dts-01.nyroc.rr.com
Address: 24.92.226.40

> set type=ns
> 242.66.in-addr.arpa
Server: dns-cac-dts-01.nyroc.rr.com
Address: 24.92.226.40

66.in-addr.arpa
primary name server = chia.arin.net
responsible mail addr = dns-ops.arin.net
serial = 2009080209
refresh = 1800 (30 mins)
retry = 900 (15 mins)
expire = 691200 (8 days)
default TTL = 10800 (3 hours)

> server chia.arin.net
Default Server: chia.arin.net
Address: 192.5.6.32

> 19.242.66.in-addr.arpa
Server: chia.arin.net
Address: 192.5.6.32

19.242.66.in-addr.arpa nameserver = ns1.apolloservers.com
19.242.66.in-addr.arpa nameserver = ns2.apolloservers.com

Then contact the responsible DNS server:

v:\> nslookup
Default Server: dns-cac-dts-01.nyroc.rr.com
Address: 24.92.226.40

> server ns1.apolloservers.com
Default Server: ns1.apolloservers.com
Address: 66.96.142.115

> set type=ptr
> 217.19.242.66.in-addr.arpa
Server: ns1.apolloservers.com
Address: 66.96.142.115

217.19.242.66.in-addr.arpa name = jpsoft.com

DIG.EXE is another tool ... powerful and difficult to use. It'll trace an IP
back to the source in one step:

v:\> dig +trace +nocomments +nocmd -x 66.242.19.217
