Backing up a user profile

I want to set up a batch file that will copy the User profile for back.

Microsoft posted
(Win.10. How do I transfer all my apps files etc to new loigin? Start Menu GONE on my log in, but OK on husband's.)

that if you copy a profile you should exclude
Ntuser.dat
Ntuser.dat.log
Ntuser.ini

In addition, I don't want to include the Documents folder out of consideration for the size.

Would it be the "Except" command that I woould use, and if so, how would it look?

I wouldn't use EXCEPT. It's a kludgey holdover from MS-DOS days. Use exclusion ranges instead:

copy /[!ntuser.dat ntuser.dat.log ntuser.ini documents\] /a: /s /v /g /md "%userprofile\*" "d:\backup %_datetime\"

Note to Rex: HELP FILEXRANGES really ought to document DIRNAME\ to exclude subdirectories.

COPY /A: copies files regardless of attributes. It's like /A in most other commands, but in COPY /A copies files in ASCII mode -- i.e. mangles them.
