Can you use escape characters (^t, ^r, ^n ...) with PRINTF?

I tried the more obvious things. None worked. The second one below had a surprising result.

I may be missing the point Vince, but why not just use the \t, \r, \n in the printf format string?
 
Ugh! Thanks @Steve Pitts. I didn't even think of that. I was 100% in command line mode. I probably should have read the first line of PRINTF'd help which contains "using the C printf format".
