It would be helpful if File Explorer had an "up directory" button to go "up" one level to the parent directory.

I'm not sure whether it's in File Explorer or not, but if you install the free add-on QTTabBar.exe the address bar at the top has a back-arrow and an up-arrow.
Note that there is a version 1308 that needs to be installed, then 1309 is an update. I have 1308 installed on multiple Win 7 and Win 10 PC's, both 32- and 64-bit and I haven't had any problems.
