%random - is it broken?

just a short question: what am I doing wrong here?

I don´t get it - this should be the simpliest way to generate a random number, but it simply does not work.
None of the examples in the help file work either

You're missing the @sign:

%RANDOM by itself returns a random number between 0 and 32767. Presumably this is for compatibility with CMD.‍EXE.
