TCC 11 - Dir /2?

Hi Guys,

Just found that Dir /2 or /4 doesn't work for me under TCC Prompt only Window. It does work under the TC 11 TCC Prompt DOS Window.

Windows XP SP3, TC11 Build 40.

Have I missed something?

Not sure what you're referring to -- TCC's DIR behavior is exactly the same
whether it's stand-alone or in a Take Command tab window. (Except that
you're likely to have a larger window when running in Take Command, so if
you have LFN names > 39 characters you'll never be able to use /2 in an
80-column window.)

The /2 and /4 options are obsolete and unlikely to produce useful results
unless you either have very short LFN names, or you use the /X and/or /Z
options.

If I call TCC on its own and try 'Dir /2' or 'Dir /4' it only gives me a single column of directories/files.

If I call TCMD and try 'Dir /2' or 'Dir /4' in the TCC Prompt window I get the two, or four, columns OK.

PS. The command I normally use is 'dir /2/x/p/l'

You're probably comparing a much wider Take Command tab window, that is
capable of displaying at least two columns of the longest LFN name in the
directory.

Try it with the same size window, in the same directory, and you will see
the same results.

Ah Ha!. That was it. But, I still find it strange and can only assume there was a change in moving from 4dos to tcc that I never noticed. I have always used the dir /2/x/p/l command under a 'd' alias to display 2 columns of directories/files.

So. I take it that under TCC that if it cannot display the two columns within the defined 'screen' width/columns the it reverts to single column mode? Yep. Just confirmed. Tried it in a purely 'DOS' apps/files directory and the two columns appeared OK in 80 column mode. Probably explains why I didn't come across the issue previously as I normally work in that directory.

OK. Now I know what's happening I can adjust to suit. Need to retain the 80 column for DOS apps, per the other thread.

It seems to me that on FAT32, FAT, and NTFS, using *dir /2 or *dir /4 gives
filenames only, whether a stand-alone console or part of TCMD. However, all
my drives support LFN, so it looks like it is doing what the help claims.
